Once, one of my mother's cousins, teasing, said that I better not get married to a Japanese boy out here. She also said that she bets I'm turning Japanese.To be truthful, I've never been an ignorant, arrogant, asshole of an American, mostly because I'm Puerto Rican, and that's a different column altogether. (Although I would like to say I am not usually an ignorant, arrogant, asshole of a Rican, either.) But that doesn't mean I blend in all that well out here.
I once thought the best way to survive in Japan is to bow down (get it? bow?) to the fact that the prevaling idea is that you, the foreigner, will never be Japanese. And while I'm trying to force myself to not bow down to that anymore, to not take that as the ultimate word as to what I will always been seen as in Japan, especially if I actually do end up meeting, and marrying, a guy out here, I myself can't ignore that stereotype either.
Nor the others of foreigners that are so prevelant in this country.
That aside, if I say that I was turning Japanese, would you hold it against me? I've always been too passive for my own good anyway.
But I am content. Never forget that.
